Flensburg

Flensburg was bombed several times by the Allies during World War II. The attacks began in 1942 and were directed against the port’s shipyard. In 1942-43 three Zombeck towers were built and in 1942-43 a navy protective bunker T750, primarily to protect workers at the shipyard.

Several civilian shelters were built in other parts of the city.

Flensburg was for a short period of time in April/May 1945 the German capital, when Adolf Hitler appointed Admiral Dönitz as his successor. Dönitz served as head of state until he and his government surrendered to British troops on 23 May 1945 at the Naval Academy Mürwik in Flensburg.
