Gun Battery Cap Ferret

To protect the entry to the Arcachon bay, the German army built a gun battery at Cap Ferret. The battery consisted of four 105 mm. guns placed in bunkers (R671) and a command bunker (R636a) to point out targets and control the fire.

Both Ammunition bunkers (R607) and several crew bunkers (R621, R622 and R502) were built.

On the beach at Belisaire 2 km. north of the battery, an air defense position was built with bunkers for the guns and a observation bunker (R637).

The area is very vulnerable to sand felling and most bunkers are currently located on the beach or in the water.

On the other side of the entrance, only 2 km. To the southeast, Europe's largest Sand dune (Dune of Pilat) can be found, is visited every year by 1 million tourists.
